My Little Poppies Week in Review

My Little Poppies Week in ReviewWell, it’s Friday. I’ve decided to resurrect our week in review series, folks.

And, it’s a February Friday.

This lifelong New Englander doesn’t love February and so I like to celebrate every February Friday.

My Little Poppies Week in Review

Let’s take a moment to celebrate. We made it! Another week of February down!

In honor of this celebration, I’ve decided to resurrect our week in review series. And so, without further ado, I present to you the week that was…

Here’s what the poppies have been up to:

Saturday & Sunday

Over the weekend, my sweet girl celebrated Valentine’s Day by donating her locks to Children with Hair Loss. You can read why we picked this organization here.

What better way to celebrate Valentine’s Day than with an act of love. Donating to Children with Hair Loss.

Monday

We’ve recently started a new Monday routine and it is awesome. The kids work together to create a “restaurant” for their grandparents. This week, the restaurant had a Valentine’s Day theme, complete with Andrea Bocelli on Pandora and hand-made pasta. There was even a candle making tutorial!

Homeschool today: homemade pasta!

Tuesday

Tuesday started off with this early morning read aloud sweetness and then it went downhill from there. Our day felt wildly off-kilter and rather than fighting it, we threw in the towel just before lunch. By doing so, we managed to salvage our moods, our sanity, and the rest of the day. We even did some late afternoon history fun!

There is nothing sweeter than waking up to THIS ????

Wednesday

Our family loves yoga, but as a mom, I find it especially important during the winter months when the kids are naturally getting less exercise.

Thursday

I know I gush about Brave Writer all the time. We are happily obsessed.

Our family ADORES Brave Writer. We are IN LOVE. My oldest goes through phases of being a reluctant writer, but Brave Writer never fails to inspire. Here is today’s free write. It is a description of a piece of furniture. The result? Yes, it is messy, but there is great beauty in the details!

The poppies are currently reading:

I’ve said it before but I’ll say it again: I firmly believe that the only thing you really need in order to homeschool is your library card. The spine of our homeschool is well thought-out read alouds and oodles of library trips.

Our Current Homeschool Read Alouds Include

Dad is reading:

Mom is reading:

7-year-old is reading:

Yes, again. He loves to re-read!

6-year-old is reading:

Do you have books that you refuse to read aloud? These are on my list. Still, I love that she gets lost in them.

We all adore this series!

When my daughter wrote her Homeschool Manifesto, she put cooking very high on her list. As a dairy free kiddo, this book is one of her favorites.

4-year-old is reading:

(There might be a theme happening with my 4-year-old, folks!)

This is what the {Virtual} Family Book Club is reading:

Our book club is in the middle of a month of performance books. Last week, we enjoyed ballet stories and this week we’ve moved on to magic. This week, we spent a lot of time reading Big Magic for Little Hands. My oldest has been on a magic kick all winter and we are enjoying this oversized text with a fun, retro feel.

This week’s hot topics:

I love to share what I’ve been reading on both Facebook and Twitter. These were the articles that garnered the most discussions and shares this week.

What Ivy League students are reading that you aren’t ~ Christopher Ingraham, Washington Post

What a gorgeous week. 🙂 Your daughter looks beautiful with her new haircut - and what a lovely way to celebrate Valentine’s Day. We are huge Brave Writer fans too. Your son has wonderful handwriting! My 10 year old hand-writes his copywork but uses a keyboard for his freewriting. His hand could never keep up otherwise! I love the pic of your guys on their yoga mats. Have a fabulous weekend, Cait!

Thank you, Lucinda! My little guy wants to learn typing. He uses the computer but doesn’t know how to type. Have you tried anything that you liked?

Jasper’s been doing Nessy Fingers since September. He’s almost pathologically auto-didactic so I don’t get much feedback, but he tells me he can now do 35 wpm with 100% accuracy, and the program is evidently keeping pace with his high need for novelty, so I’m a fan!
