I can’t believe we’re still talking about academic acceleration and gifted children. Quite frankly, it makes me sad… and angry… and then sad once more. When Leo was 3-years-old, he was obsessed with dinosaurs. Obsessed. We had dinosaur books everywhere, he drew pictures of dinosaurs, he wrote books about dinosaurs. We read [easyazon_link identifier=”0545694809″ locale=”US” tag=”mylitpop-20″]Dinosaurumpus[/easyazon_link]! so many times that I still have it memorized. Our copy is worn and tattered, well-loved. One night, when I went to tuck Leo in for…

When you are the parent of a gifted or twice-exceptional child, peer relationships are often an area of concern. While most children develop in a relatively uniform pattern, gifted learners are asynchronous in their development. And the more gifted the child, the more asynchronous that child may be. There can be huge differences between a…

A Gifted Math Curriculum for Your Little ‘Mathemagician’

A Gifted Math Curriculum for Your Little 'Mathemagician' My Little Poppies

I’ve mentioned before that my youngest is a bit obsessed with numbers. He has this uncanny ability to see numbers, and math for that matter, in everything. Ask him to eat his lunch and he’ll count bites or talk fractions. Take him on a hike and he’ll talk about the symmetry of tree leaves. You should see his excitement when he discovers a hidden pattern somewhere in his little world. His favorite activities are extreme dot-to-dots, puzzles, and math games. Last night, as I was tucking him in, he asked me how he could measure the world.

The other day, he referred to himself as a “mathemagician”… and I thought it was a perfect description. He is a mathemagician! He helps us to see the magic of math around us…

…the only problem with living with your very own mathemagician is that it can be hard to keep up with him. He delights in math and he devours math. I am constantly on the hunt for more math resources and so when I was given the chance to check out Kendall Hunt Project M2: Mentoring Young Mathematicians, I had to check it out!

When our oldest son was three-years-old, he was obsessed with all things nature. Many of his conversations revolved around animals and he loved nothing more than to curl up with an animal book or nature documentary. During the day, his play centered around the animal world. He would pretend to be a ring-tailed lemur, meerkat, or…
