Welcome back to the 10-Day “Coffee and Books” Read-Aloud Challenge. Today is Day 4 and the prompt is BIOGRAPHY/HISTORY.
Let’s chat…
Day 4: Biography/History

Biographies can help parents discuss big, heavy topics…
Sometimes, the news is downright scary.
As parents, we want to protect our kids. We want to protect childhood. And yet, we want them to flex those super-important empathy muscles. We want them to put themselves in another’s shoes. How can we talk about difficult topics without making it completely overwhelming? How can we protect our children and yet show them how to be resilient, to stick up for others, and to tackle life’s obstacles?
One way is through stories, specifically biographies and history books. Everyone has a story, and we can all learn and grow by listening to one another.
Biographies are important.
Why? Well, here are just a few ways that biographies benefit children:
- Biographies help children to see another person’s perspective, increasing empathy, and understanding.
- Biographies enable kids to learn about a person from a completely different era and background.
- They help children to understand the world in a completely different way.
- Biographies demonstrate how other people handle struggles and conflicts in their lives.
- Biographies inspire children to dream big! They help kids to think about the future and how to make a positive impact!

A homeschool history story for you…
Several years ago, our family went to visit a local co-op. The co-op focused on U.S. History. I thought it would be the perfect fit for our family because I hadn’t yet found the perfect curriculum for our family and, as a result, I felt I was a Major History Slacker.
On the day we observed the co-op, the group was talking about some key events of the American Revolution, including the capture of Fort Ticonderoga, the Battle of Bunker Hill, and the Boston Massacre.
We had not covered a single one of those topics in our homeschool.
And yet, every time one of the leaders asked a question, my oldest would raise his hand. And when he was called on, he answered correctly and thoughtfully.
I was both proud and confused. Another mom patted my back and said, “Well done, homeschool mama! You are rocking history.”
My oldest heard the exchange and loudly proclaimed, “It wasn’t her! It was Nathan Hale!”
We all burst out laughing. It’s true. It was Nathan Hale and his Hazardous Tales.
