Oversized Picture Books from Candlewick Press
I have loved Candlewick Press for years. Decades.
When I was a pre-teen, I used to babysit for my neighbors. The mom, who I adored, was an avid reader. She and I would swap books all the time. We also shared a love of children’s books. She was the one who first introduced me to Candlewick Press, a book publisher located just outside of Boston.
It was love at first sight.
So, when I was allowed to check out some new books from Candlewick Press, I jumped at the chance.
I love Candlewick Press for several reasons:
- First, their children’s books are high-quality
- Second, the illustrations are often gorgeous
- Finally, my kids always love Candlewick Press books! And I love to follow their lead!
Here are the Picture Books from Candlewick Press we selected:
Animazes: Extraordinary Animal Migrations
This book teaches children about animal migrations in an engaging, hands-on manner! Follow the path of each animal’s migration with your finger. Try to avoid predators and learn oodles of fun facts along the way.
My kids loved learning about Christmas Island red crabs, wildebeest, humpback whales, reindeer, monarch butterflies, Mali elephants, straw-colored fruit bats, alpine ibexes, antarctic krill, polar bears, sockeye salmon, arctic terns, rockhopper penguins and - our family’s favorite- the ruby-throated hummingbird!
A World of Discovery
This oversized nonfiction title will have your little STEM-lover engaged for hours!
Learn all about some of the most important inventions of all time. From money to the wheel to printing to radio, to electricity to aviation, to space exploration and so much more.
My children loved learning about the flush toilet (because toilets and potty humor are always a win around here!), and also about DNH and artificial intelligence.
You could leave this title out with a Tinker Kit and boom! you are strewing. Sit back with a cup of coffee and watch your children invent something amazing!
Greek Myths and Mazes
In this book, children will be delighted as they get lost in their favorite Greek Myths. The book is full of oodles of info about the history and mythology of ancient Greece.
We loved every single one of these Candlewick titles, but this one is above and beyond my kids’ favorite. Why? Because they have been rereading anything and everything by Rick Riordan during the pandemic. (Are your kids rereading old favorites, too? We talked about how comforting this can be on a recent episode of The Homeschool Sisters Podcast with author S.D. Smith!)
Life: The First Four Billion Years
For the past several weeks, my family has been enjoying the documentary One Strange Rock, narrated by Will Smith. This National Geographic documentary discusses the history of our planet. It is fascinating and the book Life: The First Four Billion Years is an excellent companion to the series.
If you have a budding scientist, she will love this book! It’s overflowing with countless fun facts that will be sure to astound your young scientists.
Planet Earth
This oversized title is absolutely gorgeous. It’s a work of art! With countless flaps and fold-outs, your children will dive into the extraordinary science of our planet. This is one of those books your children won’t be able to keep their little hands off! Pair it with a documentary and you’ve got yourself a Lazy Unit Study!
Sleep: How Nature Gets its Rest
This beautifully illustrated title will teach your children about sleep in the animal world! Your children will learn which animals sleep during the day, which animals sleep at night, whether animals dream, and whether they close their eyes or stand up while sleeping!
This is the perfect nonfiction before-bed read for your little animal lovers!
The Speed of Starlight: An Exploration of Physics, Sound, Light, and Space
This oversized and colorful title helps make complex subjects easier to understand. The illustrations will help children to understand the speed of light, sound waves, and beginner quantum physics.
This is the perfect title to leave out, open, on your coffee table. This is called strewing and it is sure to result in stealth learning!

We love Candlewick Press, as well-for the same reasons! I can’t think of any oversize books, specifically, but I LOVE Kate DiCamillo (my kids do too) and they publish her work. I think she’s one of the best writers of children’s fiction alive today!!
