Kids Say the Darndest Things! (Santa’s Coal)

Kids say the darndest things! Do you guys keep a record of funny things your kids have said or done? When Leo was a toddler, a friend recommended that I get this book called My Quotable Kid to record all the funny things that he said. I ended up getting one for each kid because I have loved recording these gems to share when them later.
Last night, my little poppies were getting ready for bed and I overheard this conversation:

Leo, “Have you guys noticed an increase in toy catalogs recently? It’s because Christmas is coming.”
T, “I’m worried Santa will put Seuss on the naughty list. He’s been bad today.”
Seuss (giggling), “Yeah! I’ve been bad!!”
Leo, “Legend has it you’ll get a lump of coal in your stocking if you’re on the naughty list.”
T, “I’m worried that will happen to him.”
Leo, “Well, I suppose he could use it as fuel. Like for a grill or something.”

I stifled a giggle from the other room. This conversation is so perfectly them. It also reminded me of another gem, from several years ago, which also had to do with Santa’s penchant for doling out coal to the naughty.

Edgar the Elf: a fly on the wall, a thorn in my side.

Remember Edgar the Elf’s brief stint in our house? Well, this conversation is from that year, a year chocked-full of Leo’s shenanigans that left Schizz and I frazzled and exhausted by day’s end. In fact, I’m certain Edgar was present for the conversation. I don’t remember the exact circumstances, only that I was worn thin with Leo’s behavior on this day. Worn so thin that, in a moment of weakness, I brought up the whole if-you’re-naughty-Santa-puts-coal-in-your-stocking-thing. And do you want to hear 3-year-old Leo’s dry, indignant retort?

“Well, if Santa leaves me lumps of coal, I’ll use them to make a Frosty the Snowman!”

It’s funny because I thought for sure I’d remember these gems but when I read through them I’m always reminded of good ones I forgot. I highly recommend recording them. Makes for entertaining reading 🙂

Lol! Such a cute story! And you’ve inspired me to get better about writing down the cute things my guys say. 🙂
