How to Rock the Most Important Part of Your Homeschool Day
Reading aloud is the most important part of your entire homeschool day
Reading aloud has a host of benefits for children, tweens, and teens. When you read-aloud to your children and teens, you shower them in sophisticated language and rich vocabulary. You grow their fund of factual knowledge. Research shows that reading aloud is the best thing we can do, as parents, for our children’s future academic success.
But reading aloud does so much more than boost those academic skills. Reading aloud helps children to understand the world around them, to put themselves in another person’s shoes, and to understand and care for others. Reading aloud also levels the playing field so that readers and non-readers can share the same experience and have amazing conversations together.
Reading aloud also has a positive impact on family life. When you read to your children, you are sharing an experience and connecting. Guess what? Connected kids tend to be more content and cooperative. Plus, you’re making memories to last a lifetime!

We all want to raise curious, joyful, lifelong learners. Well, guess what? If you love to read, you can learn ANYTHING!
A simple, sustainable read-aloud routine can help you through even the most challenging homeschool seasons.
Our morning read-aloud routine, which we lovingly refer to as Coffee and Books, began during a challenging homeschool season. It is now a treasured family tradition and the spine of our homeschool day. Our morning read-aloud fuels learning for the entire day. This routine has helped us to muddle through even the most challenging homeschool seasons. When life is throwing lemons at us (Hello, 2020!), it can feel really good to accomplish the most important thing, even when it feels like all the other balls are dropping.
Want to know my homeschool mantra for tough times? It is this: When in doubt, read aloud.
When you read aloud, you can cover any academic topic, any interest, any genre. Are you feeling that you have been slacking in math? Grab some math picture books and snuggle up on the couch. That’s math, my friend. Check off that box and breathe a little easier.
I honestly believe you could homeschool with your library card alone. As homeschool parents, we tend to overthink and overcomplicate all the things when the best ideas are often the simplest ones. And it might seem almost too simple to be true, but reading aloud is the most important part of your entire homeschool day!

One challenging homeschool season, when I was still juggling little ones, I would plop my trio in the tub and read Dahl aloud. It was a sanity-saver during that dreaded pre-dinner hour!
