Truth be told, I’m not really a gadget person. Still, I thought it would be fun to take part in iHomeschool Network’s Our Favorite Gadgets link up. I’m sure my gadgets will be different than the others, but they are important to us!

Our Top Ten Gadgets

1. A Library Card

I’m a firm believer that the only thing you really need in order to homeschool is a library card. I loved our local library before homeschooling, but I have a deep appreciation for libraries since embarking on this path.

2. The Read Aloud Handbook

I have said it before, but I’ll say it again: I truly believe that if every parent and educator read this book, the world would change for the better. If you have yet to read it, you must pick it up. You won’t regret it.

Reading aloud to children is of the utmost importance. Read aloud early, read aloud often, read aloud even when they can read independently. Do you need more convincing? Check out these posts:

3. DIY Nature Explorer Pack

My son often asks, “But when do they get outside?” when he sees the school bus pull up to the bus stop at almost four o’clock each day. Without a doubt, spending time outdoors is one of the top homeschooling perks. I don’t know what we would do without our daily dose of fresh air and excerise. We would undoubtedly be a lot crabbier, that’s for sure! If your child needs motivation to get out there, look no further:

4. A well-stocked game closet

My game closet is almost embarrasing. Almost. Mostly, it’s all my childhood dreams come true. I believe that play is so important, and so much learning can happen by playing games with family members! Plus, you are building relationships and making memories that will last a lifetime!

5. A fantastic planner

I am someone who needs a good, old-fashioned planner. I’ve tried them all, folks. Last year I met Erin Condren and it was love at first sight. I can’t imagine ever finding a planner better than this one. It keeps all of our appointments, activities, to-dos, and ideas in one spot!

6. A Globe

I’ll often put our globe on the island as we eat. It’s amazing how much learning happens with such a simple item!

And, as many of you know, we have been on a geography kick here this fall. There are so many fun things you can do with globes and maps!

7. Quality nonfiction and reference texts

You are going to answer so many questions during your homeschooling years. You will need a good dictionary, thesaurus, atlas, an arsenal of encyclopedias… and a lot of bookshelves!

8. Art supplies

Creativity is so important for children. One of the many benefits of homeschooling is the ability to explore arts and music without time or budget constraints. In public school, these are the first items cut from the budget. At home, you can encourage a love of the arts!

9. A laminator

This little laminator is inexpensive and I’ve had it for years. As an educator I used it before homeschooling, but I have used it innumerable times since embarking on this path.

Once you have a laminator, you’ll feel inspired!

10. Music OR Headphones

Now, this might seem terrible, but it’s honest. There are going to be hard homeschooling days, days when you will threaten to send them back on the big yellow bus. On these days, you need to take special care of yourself. And, if you’re feeling especially desperate, you may need to drown them out in one of two ways, both courtesy of Bose:
