Folks, I’ve tried to make peace with Laundry, but Laundry always wins. You think you’ve conquered Laundry for, oh, fifteen minutes and then Laundry is back with a fiery vengeance.
Not only that, but Laundry likes to haunt you. I can’t enter a room in my house without finding Laundry. Usually in the form of rogue socks. Of course, I’ll never find two of the same socks in the same room. Oh, no. I find random rogue socks strewn about my house.
And yet, when it comes time to leave the house, my children cannot seem to locate socks. I sit in my car, ready to put keys to ignition, and I listen to the kids carry on, tearfully, that they cannot find their socks.
What the heck, Laundry?
I have my best ideas in the middle of the night when I should be sleeping, and recently I had a pretty darn good one: a simple sock solution. While this idea and the photos that follow would horrify Martha Stewart, I know there are folks out there who will appreciate its simplicity.
Behold… my laundry zone:
To the right of my dryer, you find an overflowing trash barrel, drying racks, and sports and snow gear, but now - right near the dryer- there is a brand new addition: the universal sock bin.
When I’m doing laundry and I come across a white sock, I toss it in the bin at my feet. I don’t pair it. I don’t fold it. I just toss it, just as the kids toss socks around the home. It’s simple. Yes, it barely makes a dent in the Laundry situation over here but when I’m sitting in the garage waiting for the kids to get shoes and join me, they know where to find those socks!
Take that, Laundry!

I buy everyone in my family the same socks. That way it makes it easy to pair up, and if one is lost I’d never know. Sorting them and putting them together is a breeze. When these socks get worn out, I buy another package of the same socks. There are a few decorative ones here and there, but those are easy to pair up.
Love this!
I sort clothes into two baskets from the dryer or off the clothesline: one for my clothes and household linens and one for my partner’s clothes. I dump mine onto out bed right away and put them away. Partner does his own. Done.
