I’m going to park my top five gifted and twice exceptional (2E) posts of 2014 right here, all in one spot. These are the posts that you guys read and shared the most during the year. As always, thank you so much for reading this silly little blog of ours and for sharing in our journey.
Top Five Gifted and Twice Exceptional Posts of 2014 from My Little Poppies
1. Profoundly Gifted Guilt (Zero to Sixty) It’s not easy parenting a profoundly gifted, twice exceptional, and full of OE little guy. In fact, there’s a lot of guilt involved!
Over time, I’ve learned to accept this 0-60 development as Leo’s modus operandi. So, while I found it completely fascinating that at age five Leo could tie both his shoes well -on the very first attempt- after watching me do it one time, I wasn’t totally floored. There was no guilt this time, only gratitude that he is ours and that we have the privilege of helping him become whoever he is destined to be.2. Sensory STUFF (Overexcitabilties, intensities, SPD, ADHD, anxiety, behavior… call it what you will) It’s all about baby steps with these twice exceptional kiddos. Here are some resources that helped me along the way.
3. On Sensitivity- TV Phobia Anyone? Sometimes I feel like we have the only TV phobic kid in the United States. Thankfully, I’ve read up on all things gifted and twice exceptional and worked on building a community. This community has helped me to understand Leo’s behavior, and to realize that sensitivity to themes isn’t as rare as you might think. It takes a village!
Suddenly, Leo stopped painting and asked, “Hey Mum…. Do you ever get worried that there are just too many people on the earth building houses and using the planet’s stuff? Do you worry that we’re just going to run out of stuff and space? And that there’s gonna be no room for all the people and the animals? Like we already are seeing it? Like how the coyotes are in our backyard because there’s not enough space for them to just be?” And there it is… that proverbial apple and it is not far from its tree. He looks exactly like Schizz and, 99.9% of the time he acts just like Schizz, but every now and then there’s a little bit of me thrown in.Yes, bud. Yes, I do. I was unable to articulate it that well at your age, but I totally get it.4. Top Gifted, 2E, and Homeschool Resources I’ve spent the last couple years researching, and here are my favorite resources for parents of gifted and twice exceptional kiddos.
You’ve asked and here’s my answer, folks! Here are my top picks for gifted, 2E (twice exceptional), and homeschool resources. I recommend these gifted, 2E, and homeschool resources as a school psychologist and as the mother (and now homeschooler!) of a PG, 2E, and full of OE little guy.5. Library Love I didn’t think I could love the library more, and then I was blessed with a PG, 2E, and full of OE little guy. Our librarians understand and appreciate him better than anyone in the school system ever did.

Last May, Leo was still in the public school system. Like many parents of gifted children, Schizz and I struggled-unsuccessfully- to get his needs met. At our final, terrible-horrible-no-good-very-bad meeting with the school, I found myself saying aloud what I’d previously kept to myself, “I wish that our local librarians could be here. They understand him. You all clearly do not.” We decided to homeschool later that afternoon.
And there it is, folks, my Top Five Gifted & Twice Exceptional Posts of 2014. We wish you a very happy 2015, filled with all the things you love!
