The Snowy Day by Ezra Jack Keats was the very first book club selection for our {Virtual} Family Book Club! I’ve loved this book since I was a child and I treasure reading it to my children now, as an adult. We’ve gushed about The Snowy Day several times before on this site. I wrote a post on our plans to read the book for our first-ever book club book. Leo also wrote a post in which he included tutorials for crafts, science activities, and art. Here is just one example:
The Snowy Day is such a huge hit in our home… even Linda is a fan!
Cozy Winter Read Aloud: The Snowy Day by Ezra Jack Keats
Originally published in 1962, this Caldecott award-winning book follows a young boy named Peter as he joyfully experiences a snowy day in the city. Ezra Jack Keats helped to break the color barrier in children’s books with this book and several other fantastic reads including A Letter for Amy, Whistle for Willie, and Goggles!, among others. This book is now a classic in children’s literature and has captured the hearts of children for generations!
I have always held a special place in my heart for Peter. Your children will delight in reading about his adventures, in part because they are such classic childhood snow adventures! Who hasn’t enjoyed making tracks in the snow, throwing snowballs, building snowmen, sliding, and using sticks to tap snow-covered trees? What child hasn’t fallen asleep dreaming of the next day’s adventures? Is there a child out there who doesn’t delight when, upon waking, he discovers that new snow is falling?
