What if you are homeschooling a child who doesn’t plan on attending college? How do you create a non-college-bound educational track for your child, especially in high school? How does one document this type of learning? How do you field questions and comments about your child’s future? If you have a tween or teen with learning challenges, is it okay to stretch high school beyond the traditional four years?
In this week’s episode, Cait shares a question submitted to the site and phones a friend. Shawna Wingert is our homeschool cousin. She’s been on the podcast more than any other guest and with good reason! In this episode, Shawna shares her experience with all of the aforementioned questions and more!

I have a son who is very gifted in many areas- but none of them are academic. He is finishing 10th grade; I have kept a record of his courses, but have not been able to assign a grade or GPA because…well, he would probably receive Ds or Fs in a traditional school.
I don’t want him to feel like he is a failure, but I don’t want to make a legal document saying he can do the traditional work when he can’t.
Do I have to include a GPA?
Hi! Shawna here. You do not have to include a GPA. In fact, on my kids’ transcripts, I give credit/no credit for all academic classes (similar to Pass/Fail). Many private schools have adopted this as well, so post secondary systems are becoming more and more accustomed to working around it.
