Hi.
This is Leo. Last week, we dissected owl pellets. I liked it. I dissected two owl pellets and I found A LOT of bones and skulls.
You can find owl pellets in the wild OR you can buy them here. We used a little dissection kit and some safety goggles!
This is a video of me dissecting owl pellets:
What Should I Do With These RODENT BONES? The bones are sitting on our counter. What should we do with them? Share your ideas here!
Here are some other OWL POSTS from me:
Thanks for reading.

Leo –
This is very interesting. I did not know owl pellets existed. However, I asked my 8-year-old son if he knew about them, and he proceeded to tell me all about them! I love it when I can learn things from my son. He said there’s a huge pile of them under an owl nest on his grandfather’s property. So, I asked him to bring some home the next time he’s out hiking with his Papa. We’ll see what we can find!
I don’t, however, have any suggestions for what to do with the bones. Maybe I should ask my son, again! 🙂
Hi Becky!
Leo is either a super blogger or completely uninterested and this week is an uninterested one 🙂 but I didn’t want to leave your comment out there in the cyberworld. You should totally check out some pellets! They are really fascinating! Thanks for reading! Cait 🙂
Oh, I completely understand the on-again-off-again relationship with kid blogging. I know that Drew gets bummed when no one replies to his posts (for school), so I thought I might be able to bring a bit of happiness to another young blogger by commenting. Knowing that someone reads what you write can be a big incentive to keep putting forth the effort. So, keep blogging, Leo!
He loves nothing more than when I tell him someone has commented on a post. He reads them all with the hugest grin. Now… responding to those posts? That’s another story! 🙂
Hi Leo – I think it would be interesting to make your own tiny “fossil excavation site.” You could get a small container of mud and partially bury the rodent bones, then let it sit and harden. It could be an actual entire rodent skeleton, or you could conjure up some cool new creature with whatever bones you have.
I LOVE this idea (this is Leo’s mom), and I’m certain he’ll love it, too. Thanks, Tamara!
