As a homeschool mom and bibliophile, I am constantly searching for fantastic picture books.
My goal is to have a diverse library. Unfortunately, this is easier said than done. Despite census data that shows 37% of the US population consists of people of color, only 10% of children’s books published have diversity content. This is one of the reasons I love Multicultural Children’s Book Day (MCBD).
The goal of MCBD is to highlight the need to include kid’s books that celebrate diversity. Multicultural Children’s Book Day is celebrated annually on January 27th. I thought I’d get a head start and share a recent discovery with you.

Welcome To Country: A Traditional Aboriginal Ceremony
Welcome To Country: A Traditional Aboriginal Ceremony is a collaboration between two Indigenous Australians, author Aunty Joy Murphy, and illustrator Lisa Kennedy.
This book depicts an Aboriginal ceremony. Aboriginal communities across Australia have certain boundaries. Boundaries are typically defined by mountains and water, and permission must be obtained before crossing these boundaries. Each community has its own unique way of greeting, but this tradition shares a common name: Welcome to Country.
The story begins in the lands of the Wurundjeri people. The author of Welcome To Country: A Traditional Aboriginal Ceremony, Aunty Joy Murphy Wandin, is a senior Aboriginal elder of the Wurundjeri people. Indigenous artist Lisa Kennedy uses gorgeous illustrations to depict the wonder and history of the Aboriginal communities.
Welcome To Country: A Traditional Aboriginal Ceremony is a beautiful book that weaves art, history, tradition, and culture. My children enjoyed reading the story, and we are happy to add it to our library.
