Understanding Asynchronous Development
There are so many definitions of giftedness floating around out there, but my favorite one is this definition from the Columbus Group:
Giftedness is asynchronous development in which advanced cognitive abilities and heightened intensity combine to create inner experiences and awareness that are qualitatively different from the norm. This asynchrony increases with higher intellectual capacity. The uniqueness of the gifted renders them particularly vulnerable and requires modifications in parenting, teaching and counseling in order for them to develop optimally. (The Columbus Group, 1991).
I’ve said it before, but I’ll say it again: I honestly believe that the gifted world would change for the better if folks thought of giftedness as asynchrony.
Today, you can find me talking about asynchronous development over at Raising Lifelong Learners. Head on over there and check it out, and then let me know what you think!
