The Books That Fill Our Shelves
{Weekend Wrap-Up}
For those new to The Books that Fill Our Shelves, the back story is that I’ve had folks ask me, both Facebook and Instagram, to share what our family is reading and our favorite books and therefore I’ve started a new series called The Books that Fill Our Shelves {weekend wrap up}, and I’m getting heaps of great feedback.
The Books that Fill Our Shelves
Cait recently finished:
Hyperbole and a Half: Unfortunate Situations, Flawed Coping Mechanisms, Mayhem, and Other Things That Happened by Allie Brosh
If you read Brosh’s blog, you will enjoy this book. It is a perfect, hysterical and often inappropriate summer read. It was perfect poolside-reading for this summery week that was!
Cait is currently reading:
How to Change Your {Blogging} Life with Google Analytics by supermommyclub.com
Do you ever start reading something and then abandon it for weeks at a time? That is what is happening with this book. I’m horrible at reading books on my Kindle. I will get back to it at some point.

What If? Serious Scientific Answers to Absurd Hypothetical Questions by Randall Munroe
Okay, so somehow I’m the only person on the planet to not know about xkcd, so if you are a fan and you’re laughing at me right now: carry on to the next paragraph! Randall Munroe is hysterical and, not only is he hysterical, but he’s a scientist. And a comic. A scientist-comic- for real! In this book, Munroe gives serious, scientific answers to the craziest questions. I’m going to let Leo read this when I’m done because I know he’ll love it. Any parent of a child who asks nonstop crazy-making questions needs to read this book.
The kids recently finished:
This week, we have been enjoying book from our Mindful Month of Books at our {Virtual} Family Book Club. Who doesn’t need a little calm down after all the end-of-the-school-year excitement?
Zen Shorts by John J. Muth
This is one of my family’s favorite books! Stillwater’s tales are easy for children to understand and yet they carry big messages that parents will appreciate. The illustrations are gorgeous.
Goodnight Yoga: A Pose By Pose Bedtime Story by Mariam Gates
This book is new to our family and we have had a lot of fun with it. This is a bedtime story that incorporates yoga in a way that children can understand and appreciate.
Leo recently finished:

Harry Potter (books 1-7) by J.K. Rowling
Yes, again. Have you ever seen a kid finish a series and then dive right back in with book one again? That’s what Leo is doing over here. Obsessed.
Leo is currently reading:
Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix by J.K. Rowling
Leo has been obsessed with the Harry Potter series this summer. He read it last year for the first time, but never read beyond book four. Now, he’s read the entire series and then immediately jumped back in again. Obsessed!!
T is currently reading:
This week, my sweet T has been enjoying anything and everything by Mo Willems, especially the Elephant and Piggie series.
Seuss is “reading”:
Seuss is having a superhero-themed summer! This is his latest obsessed. He falls asleep covered with these little books.
Superman Classics: Superman Phonics Fun by Lucy Rosen
This weeks’ favorite audiobooks:
My little poppies love audiobooks and we’ve grown quite the collection over the years, between the ones we made ourselves and the ones we’ve ordered through Scholastic and received as gifts. Here are a couple of the audiobooks that we’ve enjoyed this week.
Poetry Speaks to Children by Elise Paschen
I cannot express how much I adore this book. I’ve posted about it before, and I’m including it in next month’s book club line-up. When I first discovered this amazing collection, I gave it as a gift to every birthday party we went to that year and I’m still getting feedback about how great the book is. It’s a treasure.
I’m so excited about a post I have coming out this week, folks. Did you grow up with Reading Rainbow? Do you remember their amazing record-breaking Kickstarter campaign last year? Well, guess what? SKYBRARY by Reading Rainbow was just released. We’ve been enjoying it for the past two weeks and my children are head over heels in love with it (I am, too!). This week, I’ll be sharing a review with a giveaway!
Next up this week:
As part of our Mindful Month, we’re going to continue to delve into these titles, and we’ve got some fun plans for July that I’ll be posting about this week, too! I invite you to join in the fun if you’re feeling a little frazzled after the school year!
Tell me, what are you reading?? Share here!
I’d love to add your favorites to my Goodreads list! Also, parents… have you seen my How to Start a Family Book Club post? It’s a fun way to encourage reading for the entire family!
More Information on Our Book Club:
The {virtual} Family Book Club at My Little Poppies is an awesome group of readers. It has been wonderful to connect with folks as book-obsessed as we are over here. If you would like to join in the fun, please join the Family Book Club @ My Little Poppies Facebook group. We cover one book every week and you can participate as much as you’d like. There’s no pressure! We share crafts, lessons, and other activities related to each book and by the week’s end we have an entire Pinterest board related to the text. That way, if you miss anything or if you have a crazy week (it happens to all of us), you can go back at your leisure and explore the book on your own time.
