I’ve had folks ask me, both Facebook and Instagram, to share what our family is reading and our favorite books and therefore I’ve started a new series called The Books that Fill Our Shelves {weekend wrap up}. We were on vacation last week and I forgot to post, but I’m baaaa-aaack!
The Books that Fill Our Shelves
Cait recently finished:
If you are the parent of an asynchronous child, or if you work with gifted, asynchronous children, this is a fantastic book for you. This book is a compilation of writings on asynchronous development from some of the best around. If this is a subject that is important to you, c’mon over and join the discussion at Secular Homeschool. I’m delighted to be a From Soup to Nuts: Discussions that Matter featured poster this week!
Twelve Years a Slave by Solomon Northup
This has been on my to-read list forever. I was dragging my feet because I knew it would be a heavy, sad read. It’s a truly amazing, sad, unbelievable story. I am so glad that this book was published because it is a story that needs to be told, even if it is hard to swallow. I’m looking forward to watching the movie with Schizz.
The kids recently finished:
This week, we wrapped up our STEAM-Filled month of May at the {virtual} Family Book Club at My Little Poppies. We’ve been enjoying these two gems from Andrea Beaty:
Rosie Revere, Engineer by Andrea Beaty
This is one of my all-time favorite books. I love that there is a female protagonist who is interested in STEM. I have given this book as a gift at almost every single birthday party we’ve been invited to this year!
Iggy Peck, Architect by Andrea Beaty
If you love Rosie, you’ll adore Iggy. Your little kiddos will want to build a tower out of diapers and build, build, build, and create after reading this one, folks!
I love STEM stories! Speaking of which, have you seen the post about our family’s favorite STEM resources? And if you liked that one, stay tuned for a favorite STEM books guest post by yours truly over at Year Round Homeschooling!
Leo recently finished:
Unbored Games: Serious Fun for Everyone by Elizabeth Foy Larsen
Leo received this gift for his birthday and he devoured it! We are a game-lovin’ family, so this was a perfect gift for my little guy!
Leo is currently reading:
Harry Potter (books 1-4) by J.K. Rowling
You should see how well-loved these books are, folks! Leo has read the first four books at least four times and he lost him self in them again over vacation. I’m interested to see whether or not he ventures on to the rest of the books this time, or if he self-censors again.
T is currently reading:
When I decided to become an Usborne consultant, I gathered all of our current Usborne books into a gigantic pile and T and Seuss have been devouring them. Miss T has been on a human body kick this year and she’s absolutely fascinated by all of the inner workings, functions, and misfunctions of the body. The grosser the better, in fact!
Seuss is “reading”:
Seuss is obsessed with Usborne’s 1001 Things to… series. Obsessed! It’s funny and sweet to me because his older brother used to be obsessed, too! He loves 1001 Bugs to Spot, which happens to be our very first 1001 book- the one that started it all! He loves the Pirate and Fairyland books, too!
Cait is currently reading:
How to Change Your {Blogging} Life with Google Analytics by supermommyclub.com
As someone who impulsively started blogging without any understanding of the process, I often have questions. My friend Colleen suggested that I read this book. I started it a couple of weeks ago but haven’t finished yet because the week before our vacation I was hyper-focused on finishing up our homeschool portfolio for the year. Hoping to finish it this week!
Beautifully Broken: Finding Joy and Purpose in the Pain by LaToya Edwards
I love reading memoirs and stories of resiliency and so when I heard that my fellow iHomeschool Network blogger, LaToya Edwards, had written a book on this subject, I had to grab a copy. Stay tuned, folks!
Next up this week:
I’m so excited about this month at our {Virtual} Family Book Club. We are going to be reading several of my absolute favorite books on mindfulness for children. Be sure to check out these titles, especially if you are looking to squeeze in some more mindfulness in your family’s routine!
Tell me, what are you reading?? Share here!
I’d love to add your favorites to my Goodreads list! Also, parents… have you seen my How to Start a Family Book Club post? It’s a fun way to encourage reading for the entire family!
More Information on Our Book Club:
The {virtual} Family Book Club at My Little Poppies is an awesome group of readers. It has been wonderful to connect with folks as book-obsessed as we are over here. If you would like to join in the fun, please join the Family Book Club @ My Little Poppies Facebook group. We cover one book every week and you can participate as much as you’d like. There’s no pressure! We share crafts, lessons, and other activities related to each book and by the week’s end we have an entire Pinterest board related to the text. That way, if you miss anything or if you have a crazy week (it happens to all of us), you can go back at your leisure and explore the book on your own time.
