I am a year-round homeschooler. I didn’t set out to homeschool year-round, but the again I never planned to homeschool in the first place.
There are several reasons why a year-round approach works for us:
- Philosophy– I believe that we are learning all the time
- Decreasing homeschool mom anxiety – I second-guess myself less often when we learn in the summer months
- Cooperation levels– I have learned, time and time again, that my children do not transition easily from no structure to more structure. It backfires every time.
Summer Plans for Your Homeschool: How to Maintain a Simple Structure
Today I am sharing tips, tricks, strategies, and resources for simple summer learning.
Chat summer plans with The Homeschool Sisters
In this episode, the girls are talking all things summer, and how to take a structured break.
Even if we homeschool year-round, we all need a little breather this summer! But how do we take a summer vacation that doesn’t turn into chaos and end with chasing a wet dog off the trampoline?
The sisters share their ideas, and what they’re doing this summer with their kids- outdoor projects, laid-back learning, and even a new idea for handling household chores.
And heads up sisters- this is the last episode of Season 2. Cait and Kara will be taking their own “structured break,” until early August- but don’t worry, they are working on lots of fun episodes for Season 3 and will be bringing you some updated episodes from the first two seasons this summer!

Ahhh… thanks for the reassurance…I do school year round as well! The summer heat here in Houston and the ability to have a natural ebb and flow our lives are just a few of the reasons that this is a good fit for us. On a beautiful February day we are free to play…. no guilt required!
We do a great deal of “fun” activities like the pool, the park, and ice cream trips. We always involve our read aloud books (we are currently on Narnia) and an “educational” podcast. And when we are home – they get to pick documentaries to watch on the computer (we’re currently on an aircraft carrier rabbit hole adventure), or I also bought fun workbooks, Soduko books, and a couple new board games. They are all new and nowhere near the “school books” so they beg to get them out!
They think they’re on summer break… but they’re not!!
