Poolside Professional Development (Plus Fun Books to Read this Summer!) [Episode 22]
The sisters are chatting books! Yeah!
They’re sharing fun books, plus books to get you ready for homeschooling *next* year- what Cait calls, “Poolside Professional Development” books. (Doesn’t that sound so fancy?!)
The gals are going to help load your Amazon cart or make the librarian look at you a little funny, but you’ll also get a ton of ideas for books that take you away from it all, and then get you inspired for next year.
Warning: Don’t try to keep up with them all while listening- we’re linking to all of them in the show notes for this episode.

Just finished “Give your child the world” Loved it!! and in the middle of “Last child in the woods” It is speaking to my passion!!! I also have “Loving the little years” coming in the mail!
Thank you so much for your suggestions and encouragement! Love all your podcasts and great ideas and your excitement for teaching and parenting is contagious.
When I feel overwhelmed or discourage I make a cup of tea and turn on one of your episodes and I always feel reassured and built up. I feel like “I do got this” Thanks gals your the best. Jenny
Great choices!
I haven’t listened to the entire podcast yet, so maybe you mentioned it, but there is a Great Courses series on mental math tricks that is quite good. If I’m remembering correctly, Arthur Benjamin is the lecturer.
Oooh, thank you for this!
I love your podcast! And I love that you did an episode all about books, one of my favorite things. Your suggestions were great and my TBR list exploded a bit. Thank you so much! I wanted to leave two comments after listening. First, the movie for Mr. Popper’s Penguins is nothing like the book. The only similarity was that there were penguins. So read it with confidence. We did it as a read aloud last year and it was a big hit! (I agree that the movie version with Jim Carey was terrible.) Second, I wanted to recommend a book that totally changed my world, Setting Limits: How to Raise Responsible, Independent Children by Providing Clear Boundaries by Robert J. MacKenzie. I read the classroom version as a public school teacher and it fixed all of my behavior issues. It was seriously like magic. I have the parenting version for my kids and it works at home too. It is the book that I come back to every time we start having drama. I highly recommend it! Thank you for a wonderful podcast. Everytime I listen to you guys I feel like I’m hanging out with homeschool mama friends.
So happy you loved it, Tamara!
[…] Last week, Kara and I had a chat about what I like to call Poolside Professional Development. […]
HI! Loved this podcast and can’t wait to dive into ALL the books! I wanted to recommend “Raising Financially Confident Kids” by Mary Hunt, since you mentioned trying navigate allowance, etc. We have found it to be really helpful!
Thank you for the rec!
Thank you for this! I just requested “All the Light We Cannot See” at the library, along with a few others. I just finished Elizabeth Strout’s new book in one afternoon. I highly recommend it.
Thanks for the rec! Enjoy All The Light!
Please host a book club for Confessions of. Domestic Failure, that would be the best! Thank you for all you do!
That would be so much fun!!
[…] Poolside Professional Development (Plus Fun Books for Summer) {S2E22} | The Homeschool Sisters Podcast […]
Love you two! First heard you both when Julie Bogart interviewed you for one of her podcasts. The book I am most excited to read this summer for my poolside professional development is Mary Ann Johnson’s “Becoming a Present Parent: Connecting with Your Children in 5 Minutes or Less” She also has a workbook to go along with it.
Hi Jen! Glad you found us. That book sounds fantastic!
So, I just recently started homeschooling 2 of my children, and learned about The Homeschool Sisters, so I’m binge listening from the beginning. This is one of my favorite episodes so far, and you just mentioned a couple of Kristin Hannah books…I wanted to share that 2 of my favorites by her are Firefly Lane and the sequel Fly Away. Also, Magic Hour! Another author I’ve recently enjoyed in fiction is The Winter Street series by Elin Hilderbrand.
