Today, I want to chat about the advantages of literature-based geography in your homeschool. If you’ve been hanging around with us for any length of time, you already know that we love books around here!
The Advantages Of Literature-Based Geography In Your Homeschool
*Disclosure: I received Beautiful Feet Books Geography for K-3rd at no cost and was compensated for my time to write a review. As always, all thoughts and opinions are my own. I only share products and resources that I would use with my own family and those that I believe other families will enjoy. If you’ve been following us for a while, you already know we love Beautiful Feet Books.
How we incorporate books into our daily learning
The research on reading aloud is substantial. The importance of reading aloud cannot be overstated. Your daily read-aloud is the most important part of your entire homeschool day.
As a school psychologist and bibliophile, I was aware of the research on reading aloud long before I became an unexpected homeschooler. I’ve read aloud to my kiddos daily since they were itty bitties, and I plan to read aloud until they leave for college.
Our family’s favorite homeschool tradition is something we call Coffee and Books.
Coffee and Books is as simple as it sounds. I drink my coffee and I read aloud to my three children (ages 14, 12, and 10). Coffee and Books feels too simple, but I know it’s the most important part of our entire day.
For the eight-plus years we’ve been homeschooling, Coffee and Books has served as the spine of our homeschool.
When the kiddos were little, reading aloud to all three leveled the playing field. Readers and non-readers could follow along. And Coffee and Books allowed for me to cover any academic topic or current area of interest.
In addition to covering any topic or subject matter, Coffee and Books helps us to connect. This connection helps lay the groundwork for a successful day. Connected kids tend to be more cooperative and receptive to learning!
Nowadays, Coffee and Books looks different. I suddenly have a teen who, for the first time in his life, is a late riser. Coffee and Books still happens daily, but some days I’ve long since finished my coffee!
Here are just a few reasons why Coffee and Books has been a success in our homeschool:
- Coffee and Books provided a slow, peaceful start to the day
- Reading during breakfast reduced breakfast bickering and sibling squabbles
- Starting our day with something everyone loved resulted in good moods
- And, while it certainly didn’t feel like work, reading aloud is arguably the most important part of any homeschool day
Coffee and Books is stealth learning at its best because you can cover virtually any subject. Have you been light on geography this month? Are you having power struggles over the math workbook? Reading aloud can fix that! Another perk is that all children, regardless of reading level, are exposed to the same content. This is wonderful for parents who are homeschooling a range of ages.

It’s so important to make your homeschool resources work for your unique family! For example, my children are older, and I have used this geography-based literature pack for our summer Coffee and Books. We are not using the teacher guide or map at the moment.
