Learn Nothing Day 2015
I’ve mentioned before that I consider our family to be unschool-leaning, but because I am homeschooling a quirky, asynchronous, PG/2E/full-of-OE little fella who loves curriculum, sometimes the unschoolers don’t see us as unschool-y. Regardless, we happily participated in a very unschool-y day: Learn Nothing Day.
What is Learn Nothing Day?
Learn Nothing Day is celebrated annually on July 24th by unschoolers. It is a tongue-in-cheek response to questions such as, “When do you take days off?” and “Do you homeschool over the summer?”
Learn Nothing Day is a vacation day for unschoolers. It’s a day off from learning.
Is it possible to learn nothing all day? Can you go twenty-four hours without learning a single thing?

6:30 am
Schizz has the day off today – what perfect timing for Learn Nothing Day! In celebration, I didn’t set my alarm for 5:00 like I usually do. Instead, I slept in. Yup. This is sleeping in for me, folks! Instead of getting up right away, I pretend to sleep in. I grab my phone and pop on over to Raising Poppies to see what has been going on in the hours since I last stopped by. I am so thankful for this community- they are so supportive and resourceful. I never fail to learn something. This morning was no different. I read several posts and articles and learned quite a bit, including the fact that my curriculum post– you know the one I almost didn’t write- was extremely helpful to quite a few folks. This made me smile. And, oops… I failed at Learn Nothing Day within ten minutes of waking.
7:00 am
I head downstairs for coffee to find this:

Clearly, we had all failed at Learn Nothing Day by 7:00 in the morning. We didn’t stop there, though! We continued to fail with flying colors. Here are some moments from our failed attempt at taking the day off from learning:

I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again, folks:
Another great post! I love how you guys couldn’t manage to “learn nothing!” Also, if your child is asking/wanting to do academics and you are supplying that for them, then I for one consider that unschooling. Because you are following your childs interest and letting them decide what they want to learn. Well done Cait! 🙂
I like the concept of “learn nothing day” 😀 Can’t imagine it working well for our family either. I guess this would require a sensory deprivation chamber, but even that would teach us something!
Indeed it would! Thanks for reading, Natalie!
