I Want a Milkshake: When Dad Works a Lot [Episode 3]
In this episode of The Homeschool Sisters Podcast, Cait and Kara discuss what it is like when dad works or travels a lot.
It can be stressful to be the only adult on duty, 24/7. Bedtime becomes more challenging, washing machines break, and the last thing you want to think about is dinner.
Cait and Kara have been there, too, and they have some survival strategies to help you through it. From games to fantastic audiobooks to dinner picnics, we’ve got you covered!
Cait and Kara want to send a huge hug to all the single mamas out there who rock solo-parenting day in and day out. If you know a single mama, ask her kids over for a playdate so that she can get lost in a bookstore, savor a silent moment, and enjoy her coffee steaming hot!

Thank you for all the recommendations on books and board games! Earlier this month I just spent 10 days alone with our kids while my husband was in Europe and I intuitively did a lot of the things you guys talked about in this episode. We didn’t have milkshakes, but special treats at Panera Bread and a fast food place (yes! I’ll admit it!), Pizza Movie Night, stacks of library books as well as nature exploration walks. Your podcast was very reassuring, thank you! 🙂

Just found your podcast and Instagram recently! I love it!!! This is a homeschoolers goldmine, in my opinion. This show, in particular, is excellent and extremely timely as my husband has just opened a franchise on TOP of working his full-time government job. Thank you for the valuable perspective, the excellent ideas, and the camaraderie! So grateful for what you both are doing.
Oh! Thank you Evita. This makes us so happy because this is exactly what we want to do with the show. I bet your house is so busy right now – be good to yourself, OK? We’ve both been there and it’s HARD. So take the short-cuts you can, and know we’re sending you a giant sister hug across the miles!
I loved this podcast. I must say though, I’m so used to my husband not being here it’s almost a bother when he is. My girls and I have a rhythm and when he is here it throws it off!! So more on days when I can’t imagine cooking another meal my kids just push around their plate we do the fast food or breakfast for dinner and a movie! This made me feel a lot less guilty about it.
We understand! That happens here too!
[…] I Want a Milkshake: When Dad Works A Lot | The Homeschool Sisters Podcast […]
I just had the chance to finish listening to this episode. My husband has been in town since mid-December (his longest time in several years) and left this past Saturday. He’s been home so long that I lost my groove for how to do things when he’s away (though it was a wonderful thing to have happen). I *really* needed the boost from this episode today. He’ll be gone all week and then he’ll be gone a minimum of one week/month through the end of this year. I really appreciated the long list of suggested games and “make it simple” ideas from homeschooling moms who get how it can be stressful to plan something “fun” (and outrageously stressful) for the kids. Thank you, thank you, thank you! I’ve just added paper plates to my grocery list and some new cooperative games to my Amazon cart. This episode was like a little hug.
We are so happy to hear this helped! This struggle is real and you are not alone <3
