Homeschooling 7th Grade: A quick note
I always say that we are “curriculum dabblers” and it’s true! We use a patchwork of creative educational resources. What we use with one child when he is in fourth grade is often different from what we used with a sibling.
Below, I am sharing the resources our seventh grader will be using this year.

One more note on homeschooling 7th grade (and beyond)
Many parents stop reading aloud to their children when they become independent readers. This is a mistake because reading aloud continues to be important, even when your child can read independently. Reading aloud is important even during the teen years!
Reading aloud is crucial for struggling readers and advanced readers. The academic and social-emotional benefits of reading aloud don’t end when your child hits age eight!
When you read aloud to a struggling reader, your reader can sit back and enjoy the experience without all the hard work. This is super important! Remember: we want to protect the joy of reading so that our children will want to put in the effort!
Advanced readers tend to read quickly. If they don’t know a word, they often skip over it because their reading comprehension is strong enough so that they can use context clues to carry on with the story.
Listening comprehension is greater than reading comprehension for all readers.
This means that your child will understand more when you read aloud than when she reads on her own, whether that child is a struggling reader, an advanced reader, or somewhere in the middle. When you read aloud, you aren’t going to skip over difficult passages and vocabulary words. You will share all of the sophisticated language and rich vocabulary with your child. You can pause to look up words and discuss questions.
Here’s another reason to continue reading to your school-aged kiddo: at this age, kids tend to find a reading niche and get lost in it. That is wonderful! We want our children to read for the sheer joy of it, but we also want to expose them to different genres. Reading aloud exposes your children to many genres while allowing them to read what they love independently.
Another important reason to keep reading to school-aged kiddos is for the connection that reading aloud provides. Remember: connection over curriculum!
Also, I want to remind you that you can still read picture books at this age. There are fantastic picture books on the market today on any topic imaginable. Don’t feel like you can’t read picture books to your big kids. You can!
