Today, I am going to be chatting about a homeschool typing program your children and teens will enjoy. But first, do you remember your very first typing class? Mine was in 6th grade and it was on an actual typewriter. Our teacher would take a piece of notebook paper and tape it to the top of our typewriter so that it covered our hands. Then, she would pace around the room saying words and we’d try to keep up.
It was so boring!
Let’s just say that typing programs have come a loooong way since the early 90s!
If you’ve been hanging around with us for any length of time, you might remember my call for typing program suggestions on homeschool planning posts.
Our family has dabbled in a number of different programs, but nothing has stuck. Over the past year or so, I’ve heard a lot of positive feedback about a homeschool typing program called Typesy. So, when I was presented with the opportunity to try Typesy and share a review, I jumped at the chance!
A Homeschool Typing Program Your Kids Will Love
*Disclosure: I received access to Typesy at no cost and was compensated for my time writing a review. I was not required to write a positive review. As always, all thoughts and opinions are my own. I only share resources that I would use with my own children and those that I believe other families will enjoy.
The Value of Adding Typing to Your Homeschool Learning
I’ve already mentioned my first [super duper boring] introduction to typing lessons, but I did have a more positive experience in high school. During my freshman year, I took a typing class (on a computer!) and I took it seriously. I knew that learning to type would be an important skill. To this day, I believe it was one of the most important classes I took in high school and college.
Why?
Because typing is such an important life skill! I knew that back in ’94 and it’s even more important now.
We live in a digital world, and that digital world is truly at our fingertips. Learning to touch type is essential for day-to-day life and the more proficient you are, the more you can access, learn, and produce! Plus, you save so much time!
Here are a few examples of the importance of typing skills in today’s world:
- Daily communication
Think about how often you text a friend, send an email, or create a document. - Academic subjects
Students are required to submit many assignments digitally. The better your keyboarding skills, the easier (and faster!) it will be to complete assignments. - College readiness
College students use computers and tablets all the time. What’s more, many college-related applications and exams are computer-based. - Career readiness
Excellent typing skills improve your job eligibility.
Do you have a reluctant writer at home? That is yet another reason to include keyboarding skills in your homeschool routine.
My youngest is my reluctant writer. The physical act of writing with pencil and paper is more laborious for him than for other children his age. This makes any writing assignment take longer, with more pushback. Keyboarding is a lifesaver for children and teens who struggle with writing!
I know that keyboarding skills will help my youngest in many areas, but it will also help him to be a more confident learner! Keyboarding is much easier for him than the act of writing with pencil and paper.
Enter Typesy. My youngest, age 10, loves the Typesy program. Here he is, in his own words:
Typesy: An Online Typing Program Your Kids Will Love
Typesy. is an ad-free interactive online typing program for grades 2-10. Typesy is available on Mac and Windows and can be accessed 24/7 via multiple devices such as iPads and Chromebooks.

As for the program itself, Typesy offers over 4,000 lessons that incorporate various subjects including language arts, science, and history, so your children will be learning as they type!

What We Love About This Typing Program
Typesy teaches keyboarding in a way that incorporates gamification and, as a gameschooling family, this is huge! Games are incredibly motivating for my children. If they get to play a game at the end, they’ll work for it!
With Typesy, my children are able to:
- build avatars
- earn status points
- play games
- attempt to enter the hall of fame.
I’ve already shared what my 10-year-old loves about Typesy, now it’s time to share what my 14-year-old thinks about the program:
Clearly, my kids love Typesy’s gamification! As a parent who adores play-based learning and gameschooling, I do as well.
But the best part is that I can see their progress. Our family has dabbled in a number of different typing programs with mixed results. This is the first program that my children have enjoyed and the first time I’ve ever had a kid type without peeking, as you can see here:
