Hi.
This is Leo. I’m going to tell you about Finnegan and the Tufted Titmouse.
A couple days ago we noticed a bird hanging around our dog, Finnegan. The next day, we watched him grab beak fulls of Finn’s fur. Finnegan was resting and did not notice that the bird was pecking his bum fur. This happened many times during the day. My mom said that the Titmouse was like Finn’s little remora fish. Our theory is that the bird was using the fur to make a nest. We took a video of it happening so you can see it:
We just haircuts and we thought it would be cool to put haircut hair outside in the yard to see if the bird took it. Our theory was that the bird would like the haircut hair, but it seems the bird likes Finn’s bum fur better.
We looked up the bird in our nature guide and we figured out that it is a Tufted Titmouse.
Somewhere there is a little egg hanging out in bum fur.
Thanks for reading!

Leo –
I watched your video earlier this week and laughed at that little bird and your dog. I was so surprised that Finn didn’t notice someone tugging at his bum! I sure would notice if a bird was pecking at mine.
I love how you imagined the little egg sitting in the fur. What a fun mental picture that is.
We have Tufted Titmice in West Michigan, too. When my son was 4 (he’s almost 9 now), he woke up one morning, looked at his messy hair in the mirror and said, “Mom, look! I’m a Tufted Titmouse!”
Thanks for your blog post. Keep noticing things out your window. Every season brings new things to be amazed by!
Oh, Becky! Two comments from you that he has not replied too. Man! I love that your son thought he looked like a Tufted Titmouse. What a fantastic description! The snagging of the fur continues and it’s thoroughly entertaining for all parties, except perhaps the dog who doesn’t seem to notice. I will be sad when the nest is complete! 🙂
Great Job Leo! My 7 year old son, Gabriel, thinks this is awesome. Who would have guessed that bum fur was the preferred choice 🙂
It must be cushy! 🙂
