Are you looking for family games for your homeschool?
One of the biggest homeschooling perks is the ability to play games together as often as we wish. We don’t have to squeeze a family game night into an already booked weekend, but rather we play as often as we’d like, sometimes multiple times daily. Games are an important part of our homeschool.

Children learn how to navigate their world through play. When parents play alongside their children, they have the opportunity to work on a host of skills… while having fun! Games can help children with:
- Verbal communication
- Self-regulation
- Turn-taking
- Sharing
- Listening
- Cooperation
- Focus and attention
- Following directions
- Creativity
- Social skills
- Learning to handle wins and losses
- Cognitive skills such as counting, color/shape/pattern recognition, strategy, problem solving, early literacy, etc.
Picking the perfect family game for your homeschool
If you think about it, a game costs less than taking your family to the movies and the best part is that you can play the same game for years and create many memories together. But, before picking any random game off of Amazon, here are some points to consider:
- Recommended number of players – You do not want to purchase a two-player game for a family of five.
- Age recommendations – When selecting a game, be cognizant of the ages of the children and the recommendations made by the game manufacturers.
- Time to play – Families these days are busy, and some families are busier than others. Most games now have an average game length on the side of the box to help with your selection.
- Ease of use – Is this a game that the family can play right out of the box? Will it be easy for all members of the family to understand?
- Fun factor – You want the game to be fun for all ages!
- Challenge – If the game is too easy, the family won’t play it often. The same goes for super-complicated games.
- Skills covered- Is there a particular area you want to work on with your children? Having trouble with math facts? Find a fantastic math game.
- Longevity – You don’t want to pick a game that the family will outgrow quickly.

We (and by “we” I mean my kids) love Castle Panic. I live with all these boys. The competitiveness is high. This game is amazing because we are all on the same team. Which is really nice since just going to brush your teeth is a mad race of pushing and shoving in order to “win.” It can be long. Ish. So while my kids and husband really really love it, my goldfish-like attention span does not love it. But I do absolutely love the teamwork aspect of the game.
We are such a game family; we’re a family of five, which does rule out a lot of “classic” games (No Sorry! here, unless Daddy’s gone). The ones that are getting pulled off our shelf most often these days are: Catan, Forbidden Desert, Wizard, and Five Crowns. We did try Carcassonne again recently, but… It might be awhile before it comes out again.
I keep adding to my wishlist from your posts!
