A few weeks ago, I announced The Family Book Club at My Little Poppies.
Anyone who reads this lil’ ol’ blog knows that we are a family of book lovers. I thought that a virtual book club would be a perfect way to share our love of books with you all, and also to share how we use read alouds as a jumping-off point for further learning in our homeschool. Reading aloud to your children is one of the best, easiest, and most enjoyable things you can do for them and with them. Words are so important for young minds! The Family Book Club at My Little Poppies happens over on Facebook. We now have a My Little Poppies Facebook group, where we discuss not only the book of the week, but also articles and other books. Each week, I share one book with the group and the group members are encouraged to read the book several times throughout the week, as repetition increases learning in children. Each day throughout the week, I share articles, projects, crafts, videos, and more related to the text. Group members pick and choose which activities they would like to use in their home. Members share what worked, and what did not. On Friday each week, I share a Pinterest board full of that week’s activities, in addition to other activities that I have collected during the week. As a busy mom, I know it’s not always possible to do all of the activities that you would like to do. Life often gets in the way. Therefore, the Pinterest board is a permanent place to house all of the ideas and you can always return to it later, when life allows.

Our book club members are maintaining a Family Book Club journal, in which they write or draw a little bit about each book. Any notebook will do, but I like these notebooks from Mead as they are made for younger children with space for drawing and lines for larger text.
We fancied-up our notebooks after seeing this post from Goingreno.com. I think it will be wonderful to look back on when complete, and you will also be able to see your child’s progress over time.
I’m happy to share that The Family Book Club at My Little Poppies is off to a great little start! I’ve so enjoyed getting to know the families in the group over the last couple of weeks. It has been wonderful to connect with other book-lovin’ families. If you’d like to join in our virtual book club fun, please join the My Little Poppies group on Facebook.
So, tell me folks… are you in a book club? What are you reading now? What are your kids reading? Share here so I can add to my Goodreads list!

That is awesome that your book club is taking off! 🙂 I am not on FB, but I do follow along and see what you are up too. I have been repining some of your pins. 😉 We did read The Snowy Day and played with Speedy Snow, but then it snowed A LOT and while my son was outside playing, he wanted to know why the snow looked like it had a bunch of little diamonds in it. Thus began our journey (again and more in depth) about the electromagnetic spectrum. lol. Crazy how that happens. We ended up reading a couple of books about visible light and a book called, A Rainbow of My Own. I love that book and the boy’s imagination. 🙂
I will need to get one of those journals. I am hoping my son can use it. He recently told me that too many lines on paper can make him dizzy sometimes, when he is writing. He already presses very hard and has trouble relaxing when writing sometimes. Now, the lined paper (with colors) might be causing him dizziness. I have been finding all my lined paper and seeing what might work. I may have to make my own for him. – Anyway, I love how the kids decorated their journals. What a treasure to have for years to come. 🙂
I love it, Julie!! So great. The best kind of learning is the kind you just described: natural, joyful, curiosity.
Journaling is really fun! Leo went through an anti-writing phase and having the journal really helped. It gave him ownership and pride in his work. Plus, it’s really cool to look back on!
